Hashing through my stash / Cortando my Coleccion

What does my stash consist of? About 15 years ago, I owned a small knitting business. I would take custom orders and make one-of-a-kind designs for clients. As often as possible I would order wholesale from a distributor, but this often meant minimum orders of $500 or so. If I was fortunate, I’d have several clients lined up at a time with the understanding that their garment may take 2 to 3 months till completion. Then I could buy within the minimum order…if I could sway the client to choose a yarn from the same distributor. It’s easy to deduce that with all these complications, I wouldn’t be able to achieve this very often. So what would I do? Well I’d buy yarns that I thought I could knit into something else at a later date. The result…I have a stash that consists of leftovers from custom designs, and lots of 10 balls of one colour. In addition, the yarn store which closed up soon after I stopped working there in 1990 gave me a huge box of their odds and ends (mostly half skeins of stuff). The yarns are 16 years old and many are no longer available. I’ve followed the advice of friends at knittersreview.com and have donated the acrylic (not that there was too much of it), and I’ve sorted what’s left into colorways so that I can work on multi-coloured garments. I’m determined to finish up what I have before purchasing new stuff, but it sure is hard nowadays with the proliferation of amazing blends, colours, and textures. At the moment I’m working on a shawl using a madcap collection of yarns in the greys/teals/aqua/blue colourway. I’m not sure I like the results, particularly because of the stripes. I’m choosing the number of rows randomly and I’m combining two thinner strands when necessary to get up to gauge, but even so the weights from stripe to stripe to vary some with the drape of each yarn. I’m going to finish this just to use up my yarn, even if it isn’t the most beautiful item I’ve made. I’m so determined not to frog it just so that I don’t have to RE-knit with stash.

¿De que consiste mi colección de lana? Hace más o menos 15 años, era dueño de un negocio de tejer. Diseñaba y tejia sueteres unicos para mi clientela. Lo mas frecuente posible compraba el hilo al por mayor, pero esto me obligaba a pedidas minimas de $500 por ahi. Si era afortunado, tendria variols clientes coordinados a la vez, estipulación de que el trabajo tomaria entre 2 o 3 meses. Es facil deducir que con tanta complicacion, no eran muchas veces que pude pedir asi el hilo.
Entonces me tocaba comprar mucha lana para la cual no tenia diseño ni plan. Por eso ahora tengo muchas madejas de un solo color, o de a grupos de 10. Ademas, la tienda de hilos do solia trabajar cerro las puertas por ultima vez en 1990 y me regalaron una caja llena de madejas sin pareja, o media-madeja. Los hilos tienen mas de 16 años y muchos ya no se encuentran. Unas amigas de knittersreview.com me sugerieron donar la acrilica a alguna organizacion benefica, y sin esa cantidad estoy organisando los hilos que quedaron de acuerdo a color, y composicion. Estoy determinado a tejer con toda la coleccion que tengo antes de comprar algo nuevo, pero us dura ya con la proliferacion de colors, combinaciones y texturas disponsibles actualmente.
Hoy dia estoy trabajando un chal usando una combinacion a la locura con gris, aquamarino, azul y verde. No estoy seguro con el resultado, particularmente por las rayas que da este patron. El numero de vueltas para cada color lo escojo a chance y a veces combino dos hilos mas finos para cumplir con calibracion requerido. Lo voy a terminar aunque no me guste mucho porque quiero descargarme de estos hilos ya viejisimos.

What’s new.

>I’m in the process of teaching myself everthing there is to know about setting up a podcast. I think it will be about knitting. I’m just trying to find a different angle than is already being covered. I have several things still on needles, the blue scarf, a little baby’s fairisle toque to match a little jacket, a poncho, a tychus hat and, I guess that’s all. My classes have been going well. I’ve been very busy redesigning one of the courses I teach, so making power-point presentations and reading a lot of resources have been slowing me down a bit.

Estoy en la mitad de una auto-enseñanza muy interesante, todo lo que se trata de podcasts. Creo que el tema sera el tejer punto, solamente que quiero encontrar otro angulo con la cual tratar el tema de una manera diferente. Tengo varios labores en mis agujas, la bufanda azul, un gorrito a colores para complementar una chaqueta de infante, un poncho, y un gorro tychus, y …bueno es todo. Las clases que doy estan marchando bien. He estado muy ocupado rediseñando uno de los cursos, asi que la construccion de presentationes power-point y mucha lectura de recursos nuevos esta entrometiendose.

Another toque / Otro gorro

What do you think of this colourway? It’s another Tychus. I found some acrylic worsted weight in my stash and thought I’d get rid of it quickly.

¿Qué piensan de esta combinación de colores? Es otro Tychus. Encontre hilo acrílico en mi colección y pense deshacerme de ella rapida y facilmente.

Warm head / Cabeza calientica

I finished my red wool toque, and I’m very happy with the results. The tychus hat takes 5 short-row sets, but with this brioche pattern and thinner yarn, it only took 3. The way the diamond brioche travels over the hat and the appearance the texture gives to the stripes and short rows is unique, I think.

Acabé mi gorro de lana roja y estoy contento con el resultado. El gorro tychus utiliza 5 grupos de vueltas cortas, pero con este punto brioche diagonal y lana menos gruesa, solo tomo 3. La manera en que la textura se relaciona con las rayas y las vueltas cortas le da un aspecto original, creo yo.

Happy New Year!! / Feliz Año Nuevo

Everyone being in education in one form or another, our family finds the first Tuesday after Labour Day is our ‘new year’. We make new year’s resolutions, have a nice dinner the night before and another nice meal the day of. We celebrate the newness of school supplies-fresh pencils, unscuffed rulers, new erasers, new binders and backpacks. We celebrate the possibilities that the new year holds for us, new friends, new classes (to take or to teach). With all this newness, I couldn’t help but start a new project. It’s a hat based on Knitty’s Tychus, but I didn’t use garter stitch throughout. It’s just on the ‘ribbing’ opening of the toque in mine. The main body of the toque is diagonal brioche stitch. The yarn is something from my stash, worsted weight; would like to buy some new soft merino or superwash, but this more itchy wool will have to do.

Como todos participamos de alguna manera en la educacion, nuestra familia percibe que el primer dia de escuela/colegio es nuestro ‘año nuevo’. Hacemos los buenos propósitos del año nuevo, senamos elegantes la noche anterior y aun mas especial la noche de ese dia. Celebramos la novedad de chucheres escolares, los lapices con punto recien sacados, reglas sin raspadillas, folletos y mochilas estrenantes. Anticipamos las posibilidades que el año nuevo nos brindara, amigos nuevos, clases nuevos (para tomar or dar). Con tanta novedad, no puede detenerme y tuve que comenzar un nuevo proyecto de malla. Es un gorro basado en Knitty’s Tychus, pero no use punto bobo por todo, sino solamente en el elastico. La mayor parte del gorro lo esto fabricando con un punto que se llama brioche diagonal. La lana lo encontre en mis sobras. Hubiera comprado una lana suave como merino o superwash, pero esta mas piquadilla tendra que servir.

Last weekend before school / El último fin de semana de vacaciones.

This is our last weekend before school, and for our family it’s a big deal because we’re all going back to school. My wife, a principal, has been back at work for a week already, getting the school all spiffed up for a new start. My sons’ first day will be Tuesday and they’re feeling like going back to school will be a pretty fun thing. Zachary will be going into grade five and his teacher is awesome; sadly Zach has a fever today and is feeling lousy and hopes to be better by Tuesday.		El martes regresamos todos a ‘la escuela’, y para mi familia es un trastorno porque para todos es un cambio grande. Mi esposa es directora de una escuela y ha estado en su trabaja ya por una semana; todo esta alistado, limpio y ordenado para el comienzo de un año nuevo. Los hijos estan de la opinión que regresar al estudio no es mala cosa. Zacarias entrada al quinto año y su nueva maestra es genial, desafortunadamente él tiene fiebre hoy y está un poquito resfriado, ojalá este bien para el martes.
Sebastian is going into grade four and his teacher is a super art teacher, which makes him happy. I just found out what my teaching load will be, so I’m finally able to get ready too. I’m a part-time professor at Niagara College, and I work in the International department. This means, that conditional on visas, travel, and a myriad of other variables we have a full contingent of students. If enrollment is low, I don’t get very many hours, if it’s high, I get as many as can be given a part-time faculty member. This term I’ll be teaching English Language Systems (to TESL-Teaching English as a Second Language-students), and two ESL courses – accuracy in oral communication, and academic reading. Because I wasn’t sure of my teaching load there, I managed to find another teaching gig at another college in my city, Collège Boréal, a French college, where I’ll be teaching conversational English and English for Specific Purposes, and maybe even a bilingual knitting course, ons va voir. Pictured here is my third scarf for Christmas. It’s one of the Elizabeth I patterns from Kristmen’s Design Studio called Town & Country. It’s one of three projects I have on the go. I’m worried that knitting will take a back seat in my life in the next few weeks, but I’m sure going to try hard to get some action in. I’m thinking about starting a podcast about knitting, but I want it to be different than the excellent ones that are out there, like PointySticks, Cast On, and KnitCast. What would you like to listen to? Knitting and designing from a man’s perspective? Knitting and Designing for Men? General stuff about knitting? About knitting in Canada? Any other suggestions? Sebastián entra al cuarto y su maestra es artista tambien asi que se siente muy contento por eso. Apenas me informé hoy cual seran los cursos que daré y puedo alistarme para enseñar también. Soy profesor en Niagara College a tiempo parcial y trabajo en el departamento internacional. A causa de varios factores como visas, y tramites de viaje, etcetera, no sabemos hasta el ultimo momento cuantos estudiantes tendremos registrados. Si hay pocos matriculados no enseño mucho, pero si llegan muchos, puede enseñar todas las horas que se permite a un docente parcial. Este trimestre mis cursos son: sistemas del idioma inglés (los ingresados estan preparandose para ser profesores de inglés como segunda lengua) y dos cursos de inglés para hablantes de otros idiomas-exactidud oral y lectura académica. Como no era segura de las horas que me ofrecieran, encontré otro trabajito en otro instituto en mi ciudad, Collège Boréal, que es francés. Allí enseñaré inglés conversacional y inglés para propositos especificos, y quizas un curso bilingue de punto(tejer malla), vamos a ver. En la foto aparece la bufanda tercera que quiero acabar para regalo navideño. Es una de los patrones Elizabeth Primero del Krismen’s Design Studio llamao Town & Country. Es uno de los tres trabajos que llevo haciendo. Estoy preocupado que hacer punto sufrirá ahora que empieza mi trabajo regular. Intentare mucho hacer unos puntos por aqui y por alla. Estoy considerando la posibilidad de crear un podcast sobre el punto, pero quiero que sea diferente a las buenas que ya existen: PointySticks, Cast On, and KnitCast. Si te provocaria escuchar un podcast, de que se deberia tratar? El punto o el diseño desde el punto de vista de un hombre? Tejiendo o diseñando para hombres? Cosas generales acerca del punto? El punto en Canada? Otras sugerencias?

A friend / Un amigo

Meet Chewbacca (Chewie), my angora friend, and fibre supplier. He’s a two-year old buck. Sadly the doe that I bought at the same time as him died of “snuffles” soon after I purchased her (her home barn must have been contaminated). So for now, we’re waiting for the right female to come along and keep him company. His fur is wonderfully soft and he lets me harvest it 3 times a year, by combing and plucking, not shaving. I mix it with whatever other fleece I have on hand to lighten it and to make it softer.		Les presento Chewbacca (apodo: Chewie), mi amigo angora, y fuente de fibra. Tiene dos años. Lamentablemente la conejita que compre a la vez con Chewie murio a cause de un virus que se llama “snuffles” (el sonido rasposo de las narices cuando no puede respirar bien). Por ahora estamos esperando para cuando llega la compañera ideal. Su peluza es extremadamente suave y me permite cosecharla 3 veces al año con peine, no afeitandole. Lo combino con cualquier otra lana que tengo para hilar algo mas sueve y libiano.
