Stitching and Self-Esteem / El auto-estima y el tejer

Knitting classes with the kids at my sons’ school is a blast. Of course you would know that of the 57 who signed up (after dividing these into 4 groups) not all are persisting, but a fair number are, both boys and girls. I’ve really learned a lot about teaching knitting as opposed to teaching a language, number one being that it’s hard when it’s not one on one. To solve this a little bit, I took my video camera and hooked it up to a TV monitor and then filmed myself live while explaining the knit stitch to the group. This worked for a while, but eventually every child wants his/her own personal knitting tutor…so much for technology. I thought they were hooked on the stuff. The quick learners soon became my assistants and struggling knitters watched and copied the others, awkward holds, stiff arms, loose wraps and all. We are now all happily knitting garter stitch rows and a few of the more adventurous are trying purling, but we’re still getting a good grounding. You can really tell who the converts are by the inches of scarf they have coming off their needles from working on their projects at home. This week was great! There was no more “Mr. Voth can you help me?” or “I can’t get this” or “I’m stupid or something”. We really worked hard on self-esteem issues in the group too. I know the saying that kids can be really mean to each other, but these kids proved the opposite: they were great encouragers. We all sat around the table knitting and talking and the grade 8 kids chatting with the grade 5 kids without the normal grade boundaries. Next week may be the time to start with some story-telling. I’ve been busy playing catch up with non-knitting things, but I’m still working mostly on the snowdrop shawl and a new scarf design. I’m also writing a Spanish blog on sock knitting. If you have any great blogs or sites that you refer to with regards to sock knitting (techniques, bind-offs, cast-ons, patterns, needle techniques, etc.), please share them with me. There is a wealth of English info out there, but in the last week about 800 knitters from Spain, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru and elsewhere have all expressed their appreciation for the Spanish resource site I’m working on. I want to expand the knowledge base on sock knitting for our Hispanic knit-sibs. At the moment I have a video of Judy Becker’s Magic cast-on.

Las clases de tejer con los niños en la escuela de mis hijos es muy divertido. Claro que de los 57 que se incribieron (luego los dividí en 4 grupos) no todos han perseverado, pero todavía llegan niños y niñas a tejer y a aprender. Voy aprendiendo mucho también, pues enseñar un idioma es muy diferente que enseñar una manualidad, especialmente la cantidad de atención que cada alumn@ demanda para si mism@. Para resolver esto un poco, llevé mi videograbadora y lo conecté a un monitor. Mientras tejía, en vivo se podía ver mis movimientos en la pantalla. Esto sirvió bastante al comienzo y para cuando varios niños sabian tejer, podian entre ellos ayudarse, los más habiles aconsejando o dirigiendo al los más torpesitos. En fin todos teníamos la misma meta asi que el autoestima de todos tambien crecio tanto como los tejidos. Todos están comodos con el punto derecho y hay muchas bufandas en punto bobo que crecen y crecen. Los que tejen en casa son los mas aficionados y se nota pues sus bufandas estan casi el doble o triple que los demas. Esta semana la pasamos delicioso pues no habia tantas dudas o quejas y entre nos conversabamos. Hasta la ‘frontera’ imaginaria entre grados disminuyó mucho con niños de 14 años compartiendo cuentos y chistes on los de 10 años. La semana entrante quizás será ideal para empezar a compartir unos cuentos propios con los niños. También he estado bastante ocupado con cosas no del mundo tejeril. Todavía sigo tejiendo pero con el emfasis en el chal de gota de nieve y un nuevo diseño para bufanda. También como saben much@s de Uds. estoy escribiendo un blog en Castellano acerca de calcetines. Si me llegan mas blogs or paginas web recomendados los compartire con Uds. Mas o menos 800 de hispano-parlantes han visitado al blog actualmente. La cantidad de informacion sobre calcetines que hay en Inglés espero compartir los mas que se puede con mis herman@s tejedor@s. Actualmente tengo hecho un video sobre el montado mágico de Judy Becker.

The ashes are cooling to spare Santa a hot landing; the treat plate is loaded with 9 carrots and about 5 cookies; the potted, living tree is standing proud and tall; the knitting is all done, wrapped and tagged; sigh.

Las cenizas se enfrian para ahorrarle a Papa Noel un aterizaje comodo; el plato tiene nueve zanahorias para los renos y cinco galletas; el arbol viviente en su tiesto esta recto con orgullo; todos los tejidos listos, envueltos y etiquetados; que alivio!

Holiday Knitting / Tejidos Navideños.

I’m not actually knitting holiday decorations or anything like that. I’m finishing up the gifts I had planned back in July. Almost everything is done: hats, scarves, toe-up socks. Of course, I thought of a few people I could quickly knit up another couple of things for, fortunately we’ll being seeing them closer to New Year’s so I can knit after the 25th and still be ready. What does my wife do, however, but put in a special request. It appears that a colleague in the school board would like to give a chicken viking hat to a teacher in a school whose mascot is a viking. The adult version of this pattern was still a little small, so I’ve increased it by one more hat size. She told me Saturday that she needed it by Thursday. Aaaahhh! On the up side, I’m getting paid a small fee…enough to increase my stash or knitting book collection. Naturally, it’s end of term at the college, though, so I’ve been busy marking, giving exams, marking, entering grades, marking, and marking, so knitting either has to wait, or I lose sleep.

No estoy tejiendo realmente cosas para decorar el hogar durante esta temorada navideña sino que casi termino todos los proyectos planeados desde julio: gorros, bufandas, calcetines. Por supuesto, he pensado en otras pocas personas para quienes pudiera tejer regalitos, afortunadamente no les estaremos viendo hasta fines de diciembre así que podré acabar las prendas para ellos también. El otro dia, de repente, mi esposa me pide un favor de tejer el gorro de pollo vikingo para una colega que quiere regarlarlo a un maestro en una escuela que tiene vikingo como mascot. La versión adulta no es lo suficiente grande para este maestro asi que estoy modificando el patrón. Me dijo el sabado que lo necesita para este jueves, aaaah! Por lo menos me van a pagar una suma pequeña…suficiente para aumentar mi alijo de hilo o mi colección de libros de tejer. Naturalmente estamos a finales del semestre en la universidad, asi que estoy muy ajetreado calificando, dando examenes, calificando, calculando notas, calificando y calificando, de modo que el tejer tiene que esperar o pierdo sueño.

Fair Isle Toddler Chullo Hat / Gorro Chullo de colores Para niña pequeña

I’m done! I used the leftover yarn from the sweater and sock ensemble that I knit for my friend’s little one. Apparently she’s tried on the jacket, but it was a bit too large yet. I think it’ll fit in the spring. I hope this hat will fit then too. The patterns were made up as I went along. It’s acrylic sport-weight yarn, and if it weren’t for the fact that it’s a child’s hat and I don’t know the parents’ laundry washing habits, I would have used wool.Free Pattern [Added Jan 23, 2007: Errata - Rnd 49: pd = K; or redownload the pattern]			Finalmente, lo acabe! Use el hilo que sobraba del conjunto de yaqueta y pantuflas que tejí para la niñita de un amigo. Me cuentan que ya a llevado puesto la yaqueta aunque le quedaba un poquito grande, seguramente para la primavera le quedará bien. Ojala este chullito le sirva también. Los patrones los invente mientras lo tejía. El hilo es acrílico con agujas 3mm, si no fuera por el hecho que es para niña y no conozco los habitos de lavandería de los papás, hubiera usado lana.Patron Gratis

Toddler Hat / Gorro para niña pequeña

I’m working on this hat to go with the jacket I gave my friends earlier this year, when they had their baby. The jacket was for a 9 – 12 month old, and this hat will hopefully not be too big for the girl to wear when she’s wearing the jacket. It’s going to have a pill-box shape so it won’t be particularly warm over the ears, maybe I should add little ear flaps like a chullo. What do you think?

Estoy trabajando este sombrerito para coordinar con la yaqueta que regale a mis amigos anteriormente, cuando nació su hija. La yaqueta es para un niño de nueve a doce meses de edad, y ojala no sera demasiado grande el sombrero para una niñita lucirsela a la vez con la yaqueta. Tendra la forma “pillbox” (ojala alguien me pueda proveer con la palabra en español) y entonces no proveerá mucho calor para las orejitas, quiza deba añadile alitas como los de un chullo. ¿Que opinan?

Halloween

Well my guys had a great halloween night. They couldn’t make up their minds between going around for treats or staying home and scaring the visitors to our place. The magician was able to convince little ones that candy was appearing by magic out of his hat. The zombie prisoner liked laying down near the walk up to our house and startling older children and parents.

Mis hijos disfrutaron mucho de la noche de Halloween. No pudieron escojer facilmente entre ir de casa en casa pidiendo dulces o quedarse en casa para repartirlos a los que llegaban. El mago pudo convencer a los pequeñines que los dulces aparecian con la magia adentro del sombrero. El momia encarcelado estaba contento escondiendose y salienda a gritos a espantar a los que llegaban a la entrada de la casa.

bufanda ‘Town and Country’ scarf

I’ve finally took 5 minutes to take a picture of this mohair scarf I finished at the cottage we went to for Thanksgiving. The pattern is ‘Town and Country’, one of the Elizabeth I collection by Kristmen’s Design Studio. Knitting with this British Mohair #4 was sumptuous. I only had to tink a few times and it wasn’t as bad as the norm for mohair. The pattern was easy to memorize and it was a favourite portable project.

Here is a picture of my family on a boat we rented for a morning. It was great to boat around the lake looking at the coloured leaves. It wasn’t where I knit however; that was while relaxing on the beach or in the cute cottage (see cottage #2) we rented.

Por fin ahorré 5 minutos para tomar esta foto de esta bufanda de mohair que la completé en el ranchito donde pasamos el dia de fiesta pasado. El patron es “Town and Country”, uno de la coleccion de Elizabeth 1° por Kristmen’s Design Studio. Calcetinar con este mohair de British Mohair fue estupendo. Solamente tuve que destejer pocas veces y no era lo dificil como costumbra serlo el mohair. El patron fue facil memorizar y me parecia un projecto portatil ideal.

Aqui estamos en un barquito que alquilamos por una mañana. Fue genial navegar por el lago mirando a las hojas coloradad. No tuve oportunidad tejer en la nave, pero si lo hice en la playa o en la casita (ver la 2) que alquilamos.

Not Much Knitting

Wow! It’s been busy, with everything but knitting. The storm that shut down Buffalo, came here too. Although we were only out of power for a day, it messed up many parts of my day. I feel for all those in Buffalo and surrounding areas who are still without electricity. You’d think that it’d make for an excellent day of knitting, but no, it didn’t.

Work has been keeping me very busy. I’m in the midst of writing exams, and marking all sorts of assignments that have just come due, and preparing mid-term reports. My wife is very busy and was away for a few days at a conference, and my sons have had homework-projects, and music practice and sports and…well you know.

I felted the pair of alpaca socks I made for my son this summer by accident…note to self, use superwash wool next time. I finished my wife’s shrug, I haven’t touched any scarves, etc. the blue mohair lace one which I finished last weekend on our trip to a cottage for Canadian Thanksgiving. I’m yearning for my yarn.

Uuf ! Que tan ocupado ando, y con todo menos tejer. La tormenta de nieve que cubrió y freno la ciudad de Buffalo, NY tambien llego aquí. Aunque apenas nos toco perder electricidad por un dia, estorbo mucho varias aspectos del dia. Siento pesar por todos los que viven en Buffalo y areas alrehededor que siguen sin luz. Pensaria que seria buen dia para tejer, pero asi no lo fue.

El trabajo me tiene bastante ocupado tambien. Estoy preparando examenes y calificando muchos trabajos y reportes. Mi esposa esta tambien muy ocupada y paso varios dias en una conferencia la semana pasada. Mis hijos tienen trabajos para la escuela, practica de instrumentos musicales, deportes, bueno Uds. saben.

Por error, enfieltre el par de medias de alpaca que habia tejido para mi hijo este verano. Necesito recordarme de usar lana superwash la vez entrante. El chal de mi esposa esta completa. No he trabajado cualquier bufanda por dias, menos la azul de mohair que la termine el fin de semana pasado cuando lo pasamos en un ranchito para las dias de fiesta celebrando el Accion de Gracias canadiense. Anhelo tejer…ahh

Last weekend before school / El último fin de semana de vacaciones.

This is our last weekend before school, and for our family it’s a big deal because we’re all going back to school. My wife, a principal, has been back at work for a week already, getting the school all spiffed up for a new start. My sons’ first day will be Tuesday and they’re feeling like going back to school will be a pretty fun thing. Zachary will be going into grade five and his teacher is awesome; sadly Zach has a fever today and is feeling lousy and hopes to be better by Tuesday.		El martes regresamos todos a ‘la escuela’, y para mi familia es un trastorno porque para todos es un cambio grande. Mi esposa es directora de una escuela y ha estado en su trabaja ya por una semana; todo esta alistado, limpio y ordenado para el comienzo de un año nuevo. Los hijos estan de la opinión que regresar al estudio no es mala cosa. Zacarias entrada al quinto año y su nueva maestra es genial, desafortunadamente él tiene fiebre hoy y está un poquito resfriado, ojalá este bien para el martes.
Sebastian is going into grade four and his teacher is a super art teacher, which makes him happy. I just found out what my teaching load will be, so I’m finally able to get ready too. I’m a part-time professor at Niagara College, and I work in the International department. This means, that conditional on visas, travel, and a myriad of other variables we have a full contingent of students. If enrollment is low, I don’t get very many hours, if it’s high, I get as many as can be given a part-time faculty member. This term I’ll be teaching English Language Systems (to TESL-Teaching English as a Second Language-students), and two ESL courses – accuracy in oral communication, and academic reading. Because I wasn’t sure of my teaching load there, I managed to find another teaching gig at another college in my city, Collège Boréal, a French college, where I’ll be teaching conversational English and English for Specific Purposes, and maybe even a bilingual knitting course, ons va voir. Pictured here is my third scarf for Christmas. It’s one of the Elizabeth I patterns from Kristmen’s Design Studio called Town & Country. It’s one of three projects I have on the go. I’m worried that knitting will take a back seat in my life in the next few weeks, but I’m sure going to try hard to get some action in. I’m thinking about starting a podcast about knitting, but I want it to be different than the excellent ones that are out there, like PointySticks, Cast On, and KnitCast. What would you like to listen to? Knitting and designing from a man’s perspective? Knitting and Designing for Men? General stuff about knitting? About knitting in Canada? Any other suggestions? Sebastián entra al cuarto y su maestra es artista tambien asi que se siente muy contento por eso. Apenas me informé hoy cual seran los cursos que daré y puedo alistarme para enseñar también. Soy profesor en Niagara College a tiempo parcial y trabajo en el departamento internacional. A causa de varios factores como visas, y tramites de viaje, etcetera, no sabemos hasta el ultimo momento cuantos estudiantes tendremos registrados. Si hay pocos matriculados no enseño mucho, pero si llegan muchos, puede enseñar todas las horas que se permite a un docente parcial. Este trimestre mis cursos son: sistemas del idioma inglés (los ingresados estan preparandose para ser profesores de inglés como segunda lengua) y dos cursos de inglés para hablantes de otros idiomas-exactidud oral y lectura académica. Como no era segura de las horas que me ofrecieran, encontré otro trabajito en otro instituto en mi ciudad, Collège Boréal, que es francés. Allí enseñaré inglés conversacional y inglés para propositos especificos, y quizas un curso bilingue de punto(tejer malla), vamos a ver. En la foto aparece la bufanda tercera que quiero acabar para regalo navideño. Es una de los patrones Elizabeth Primero del Krismen’s Design Studio llamao Town & Country. Es uno de los tres trabajos que llevo haciendo. Estoy preocupado que hacer punto sufrirá ahora que empieza mi trabajo regular. Intentare mucho hacer unos puntos por aqui y por alla. Estoy considerando la posibilidad de crear un podcast sobre el punto, pero quiero que sea diferente a las buenas que ya existen: PointySticks, Cast On, and KnitCast. Si te provocaria escuchar un podcast, de que se deberia tratar? El punto o el diseño desde el punto de vista de un hombre? Tejiendo o diseñando para hombres? Cosas generales acerca del punto? El punto en Canada? Otras sugerencias?

A friend / Un amigo

Meet Chewbacca (Chewie), my angora friend, and fibre supplier. He’s a two-year old buck. Sadly the doe that I bought at the same time as him died of “snuffles” soon after I purchased her (her home barn must have been contaminated). So for now, we’re waiting for the right female to come along and keep him company. His fur is wonderfully soft and he lets me harvest it 3 times a year, by combing and plucking, not shaving. I mix it with whatever other fleece I have on hand to lighten it and to make it softer.		Les presento Chewbacca (apodo: Chewie), mi amigo angora, y fuente de fibra. Tiene dos años. Lamentablemente la conejita que compre a la vez con Chewie murio a cause de un virus que se llama “snuffles” (el sonido rasposo de las narices cuando no puede respirar bien). Por ahora estamos esperando para cuando llega la compañera ideal. Su peluza es extremadamente suave y me permite cosecharla 3 veces al año con peine, no afeitandole. Lo combino con cualquier otra lana que tengo para hilar algo mas sueve y libiano.
